As soon as EHSMU staff are finished with the judges critique the busses will be leaving for school. Any member who wants to stay for the rest of the competition (Yankee and American bands and WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY exhibition) will need to have a parent or other responsible adult with them.
A written note is needed in order for someone to stay at the competition and not ride the bus home.
Greetings from Hempfield! With a record number of bands and a more convenient format (hopefully!), please note the following Opening Knight information carefully:
Showtime is 3:00 pm; gates open at 2:00. We are now hosting 28 bands. Check www.cavalcadeofbands.com for a full schedule.
Due to a number of circumstances, we have decided to run two separate judging panels with two separate awards ceremonies. Awards for Liberty and Independence Bands will take place following the exhibition performance by Millersville University. Judges critique for these groups will then take place in the field house during the second half of the festival. Despite this change, tickets and hand stamps still allow for admission to the entire event. Because of this, we will NOT have separate Color Guard and Percussion judges.
That being said, we will be sponsoring a Best Color Guard and Best Percussion Trophy in each group as determined by music and visual judges as assigned by Cavalcade.
We hope that this change in format provides everyone with a more positive Opening Knight experience!
Friday, September 17 Football Game:
We may be staying for FOX 43 Football Frenzy. I will let you know.

If you are standing in front of the stands eating your French fries or other food at the beginning of fourth quarter, you are late. If you are late you will lose 3rd quarter privileges. Don't let it happen to you. Get in line early! Keep your uniform clean for Hempfield!
4th quarter - Put gauntlets, gloves, and helmets on. Plumes will be handed out in the warm up area.
9:30 ish Perform post game.
FOX43 Football Frenzy - stay tuned for details. If our school is chosen we will be featured on Fox 43 at 10 pm. Pack up to leave. Great job cleaning up after yourselves in the stands last week!

Sign up for buses will be as follows:
Seniors - Tuesday before practice
Juniors - Tuesday after practice
Sophomores - Thursday before practice
Freshmen - Thursday after practice
Seats have already been reserved for the colorguard on Bus 2.
Seats have been reserved for chaperones and staff.
There will be about 4 cheerleaders on each bus for football games. This way all EHSMU members can stay on the same bus for football games and competitions.
Sign up is for bus 1 or 2 only - not a specific seat.
August 25, 2010
On Thursday, August 26 following the Meet the Mounts program there will be a brief informational meeting about the role of the drum line in this year's show. This is for students and parents alike. The location of the meeting will be announced Thursday evening.
August 18, 2010
Picture Night will be held Thursday August 19 at the War Memorial Field (weather permitting). Individual photos begin at 4:00 pm - arrive as soon as you can. The group photo will be at 6:00pm, and ALL EHSMU members should be in the photo (even if you are not purchasing photos). Special Senior photos will also be taken.
Community Preview Night will be at 7:30pm, in full uniform.
August 13, 2010
Movie Night at Tim Hubach's is on - rain or shine! 278 Stony Lane, Stevens, Pa 721-3068
August 13, 2010
Dear EHSMU members, (except colorguard)
To clarify - ALL show music must be memorized by next Tuesday, August 17 including ALL of Copland Finale.
Please ask for help if you need it. This is the time to take care of this before school starts and you have even less time.
If your music is not memorized you will be placed on a list of members who will be missing third quarter privileges.
When you demonstrate that you have your music memorized, you will be taken off of the list.
This is our next major goal. Please do your part to achieve this goal as a group!
~Mrs. Straley
August 12, 2010
Dear EHSMU family and friends,
Due to the weather forecast and field conditions the Ephrata High School Marching Unit Community Preview Night is being postponed until next Thursday, August 19 at 7:30 pm. Please note that this is a different time than the original date. The event will still be held at the Oak Street fields in front of the high school main entrance. Hopefully next week will be better weather!
Regular practice will still be held tonight from 6 to 9 pm. (Pick up your subs at 5:30 pm.) Be prepared to work on music. We may or may not be going outside. Section leaders will be checking to see if music is memorized at next week's Tuesday practice. Work hard now so that you can enjoy third quarter break at our first football game.
It looks like the weather will be cooler next week so we will be in full uniform for Preview Night. Please make sure to take care of hemming your uniform pants before pictures and preview night next week. Pick up your gloves and helmets in the band room.
August 9, 2010
For practice on Tuesday, please bring your HELMET and DINKLES to wear during practice. (that is, if you are supposed to wear a helmet) This way we can get used to what it feels like and looks like to wear them. This will be standard practice throughout the season. The practice before a competition we will wear helmets and dinkles.
The uniform for the Community Preview on Thursday night will be jeans and a black t-shirt along with helmets and dinkles. We are using this alternate uniform to give everyone ample time to get the jumpsuit hemmed. The bottom of the hem should just brush the top of the shoe without any crinkling of the crease.
The t-shirt does not need to be a show t-shirt, but I am sure freshmen could borrow one from an upperclassman. Upperclassmen, bring extra shirts on Tuesday.
If you have not yet picked up your helmet, it is waiting for you in the band room. Please bring your signed purple paper.
There are also plenty of gloves to be picked up. And the final shoe order has arrived.
Please be prepared to pay for these two items before picking them up. Most of you have.
See you all tomorrow.
~Mrs. Straley
August 4, 2010
Dear EHSMU members and families,
This is just a friendly reminder - For everyone's safety and for the security of our school property please do not prop open any doors in the high school building.
During school hours please use the doorbell at the district office entrance or the entrance at the main office of the high school.
For band rehearsals the back door of the band room will be open at the beginning of rehearsal. During rehearsals on the field all doors will be secured. A district staff person will accompany students to the building after rehearsal.
Please contact Mrs. Straley if you need access to the building after school or office hours.
Thank you for your cooperation,
~Mrs. Straley

July 16, 2010:
Does anyone live near Hilldale Drive of off Rettew Mill Road who could give someone a ride to practice? please contact ehsmu@dejazzd.com if you can help. Thanks!
Dear EHSMU members and families,
We need one more person to make our marching unit complete. Unfortunately we have lost a member and we have a hole to fill. The drill for the opener has already been written and it would be an added expense to rewrite it. It is written for 32 wind players which is a great number for creating really cool geometric designs. SO we want to find another person to fill that spot. This person does not have to play a particular instrument in fact they don't need to play an instrument at all. (It would be an added benefit if the new recruit played clarinet or flute.) So check high, check low check with everyone you know. We are counting on your resourcefulness to find another member. Be sure to tell them what a great experience they will have. Students, call your friends and make sure they read this email. Parents, tell your student to spread the word. The rest of the drill will be written for 32 wind players in faith that we will find someone.
~Mrs. Straley
Dear EHSMU members and families,
Due to the Ephrata Area School District being closed on Friday, August 6, we are making the following changes to the schedule for Friday of band camp. There will be NO preview Friday evening. The preview will be on the following Thursday evening August 13 at our regularly scheduled practice. Stay tuned for the time. The Pool Party will be held as planned at the Ephrata Pool from 8:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010. Restroom facilities will be available at the War Memorial Field since we will not be allowed in the building. Members will have the option of purchasing part of a 6 foot long sub for lunch since we cannot use the cafeteria. Orders will be taken during band camp. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Straley at s_straley@easdpa.org
